URJ Books And Music :: Jochsberger, Tzipora

Jochsberger, Tzipora
Tzipora Jochsberger was born in 1920 in a small village in southern Germany into a loving family that knew very little about Judaism. Joschsberger became dtermined to learn more about Judaism after she learned of her parents' death in 1944 in Auschwitz. While attending the Jewish Teacher's Seminary in Wurzburg, Germany, Emil Hauser offered Jocshberger the opportunity to leave Germany and go to pre-state Israel to study at Jerusalem's Palestine Academy of Music. Upon arrival she was soon fluent in Hebrew and she subsequently graduated with two music diplomas. After a brief stint teaching at an Arab teachers college, she persuaded the Jewish Agency to send to her to America to implement a teaching method she had developed. "Hava N'chalela" was a teaching method using the recorder to transmit through music the knowledge of Judaism, its holidays and culture to Jews throughout the world. During her stay in America, Jochsberger attained a doctorate of sacred music from the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. In 1952, she started the Hebrew Arts School in Manhattan. The school, now known as the Elaine Kaufman Cultural Center, has blossomed from 16 students in 1952, to an enrollment of more than 2,000 students. In 1986, she returned to Israel, and began working in the Israel Music Heritage Project, through which she produced an award-winning 10-part documentary video series called "A People and its Music." Jochsberger is also known as a composer, and her works have been performed worldwide.

My Jewish World: An Early Childhood Music Curriculum (Book/CD set)

Music can be a wonderfully effective teaching tool for preschool aged children. My Jewish World guides teachers through the process of introducing and utilizing song in the classroom to teach Jewish values.

In her comprehensive and easy to follow book, Judy Caplan Ginsburgh includes twenty-six songs, religious and secular, that will help to facilitate an environment of fun and learning. Each song addresses important Jewish concepts and many use Hebrew words and prayers. Judy provides comments, activities, and creative ideas, specific for each song, which can be used in the classroom to learn about being Jewish every day. The importance of saying the Sh'ma each morning, learning the Hebrew words for colors, understanding body parts, and the value of cooperation are only some of the Jewish concepts touched on in the book.

In addition, Judy Ginsburgh includes a list of suggested books for many of the topics. These books help to reinforce and expand the lessons laid out in the curriculum.

With a helpful glossary of Hebrew and Yiddish terms and the companion music CD, My Jewish World is a wonderful guide to making music significant in the Jewish classroom.
