Chajes, Julius
Julius Chajes (1910-1985) was born in Lwow, Poland. Mr. Chajes was the Honor Prize winner at the First International Competition for pianists in Vienna, and one year was appointed head of the piano department at the Music College in Tel Aviv. Chajes came to the United States in December 1937. In 1940, he became the conductor of the Center Symphony Orchestra in Detroit and was appointed to the faculty of Wayne State University in 1950. He was an active composer for 50 years. There were many performances by major orchestras of his piano concerti and other solo concerto works with orchestra. In addition to numerous liturgical works, Chajes composed and arranged many Israeli folk melodies which are very popular with American choirs.
