Jonathan Kligler, spiritual leader of Kehillat Lev Shalem, the Woodstock Jewish Congregation and veteran African American folksinging couple,
Kim and Reggie Harris seamlessly interweave Hebrew songs from the Passover Haggadah with traditional Black Spirituals carrying the ideals of equality and freedom in this 18 track collaborative CD. Songs by Phil Ochs and Freedom Singers Marshall and Matt Jones, plus Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish's poem, I Have A Million Nightingales, set to music by Linda Hirschhorn, are interspersed with spoken firsthand accounts of watershed events in the modern Civil Rights Movement by Juanita Nelson, Rabbi Arthur Waskow, Pete Seeger, and Sonny Ochs (Phil's sister). This uplifting and enlightening celebration of accomplishment through action captures a period in our history that is relevant to this day. And what a joyful blend of friendship, first class musicians, and incredible sounds!
Enjoy this masterful union of two traditions paying tribute to historical struggles for freedom.
