Hannah Spiro has been singing and strumming at Washington, D.C. area coffeehouses since she was 13. Now, at 21, she is a fixture in the D.C. music scene, with two secular albums to her credit. Aliyah, her 2010 alt-Jewish CD, is revolutionizing the concept of Jewish music. With a sound that combines elements of folk, pop and rock, Hannah brings to mind such other singer-songwriters as Natalie Merchant and Tegan and Sara. Her songs express a range of feelings and a variety of themes, while conveying her irrepressible energy. Now a senior at the University of Maryland in College Park, Hannah is majoring in Philosophy and Jewish Studies.
Hannah comments on her debut Jewish recording: "'Aliyah' is a Hebrew word that literally means 'going up.' It has connotations of going home, or going to Israel. I feel like this CD is a bit of an aliyah for me -- it's going back to my roots by addressing traditional Jewish prayers, stories, and concepts -- but it's 'going up' by taking these ideas and making them my own, both conceptually and musically. I hope some of this speaks to you, and that you enjoy the songs!"
